Palisade’s Restoration Vineyards ‘setting a new benchmark’ for state’s growing wine industry

Each year, The Colorado Association for Viticulture & Enology (CAVE) presents an Award of Excellence for Winery of the Year. This year, Restoration Vineyards in Palisade earned the distinction.
“We are honored to be recognized by our peers, many of whom have inspired us. It’s great to be contributing towards increasing the visibility of Colorado wine,” says Gary Brauns, owner and “chief restoration officer.”

Just a few minutes from the Colorado River, Restoration Vineyards is a 10-acre, family-owned winery and vineyard growing barbera, cabernet franc, chardonnay, merlot, sauvignon blanc and sémillon grapes, which were planted starting in 2007. However, when Brauns and his wife Linda bought the vineyard in 2012 it was in need of a revamp. In addition to producing limited intervention, quality wines, the goal was to build a community and an inviting experience with outdoor live music and a welcoming staff.
“Restoration Vineyards has redefined standards for Colorado wineries, setting a new benchmark with their production of world-class wines and delivering exceptional guest experiences,” CAVE said in a press release. “The family's commitment extends beyond their vineyard, as evidenced by their weekly concert series and active involvement in almost every regional event. Recognized as genuine supporters of the Colorado Wine experience, Restoration Vineyards has left an enduring mark on the entire industry.”
Wines include an estate merlot that aged in French oak for four years, an off-dry rosé of grenache, a bright and lively barbera and a white field blend made with chardonnay, sauvignon blanc and sémillon grapes.
Linda and Gary attribute this honor to a lot of hard work, producing quality wines and providing an elevated but approachable and memorable experience. “Our goal is to help elevate the perception of Colorado wine,” Gary says.
Stephanie Brauns, wine club director and daughter of Gary and Linda, says visiting Restoration Vineyards is an immersive experience.
“From the enchanting ambience and the exquisite wines to the unparalleled level of service, guests often liken the experience of sitting on our patio mid-week to the serene ambiance of a spa – an oasis of tranquility and inspiration,” Stephanie says.
“We are a small operation with big dreams,” she says. “It’s amazing how much the Colorado wine industry has grown and evolved just in the last 12 years that we have been here.” Stephanie says that the key to exploring Colorado Wine Country is to learn the stories of each winery and immerse yourself in the small-town feel.
