March roars in with events aplenty all over the state
By the Thirst Team
Get Out of Town is our weekly roundup of recommended events across Colorado, mostly focusing outside of Denver, to help everyone enjoy the entire state. For more happenings, check out our events calendar.
After a quieter February, there is a long list of great events this week, so we’ll keep each item short and give you as many recommendations as we can.
Special Olympics Winter Games
Copper Mountain hosts The Special Olympics State Winter Games on Saturday and Sunday. The event includes alpine skiing and snowboarding, cross-country skiing and snowshoeing both days. There also is a family reception and family activities on Saturday.
WinterWonderGrass in Steamboat
The 12th WinterWonderGrass music festival comes to Steamboat Mountain resort Friday through Sunday. This year’s headliners include Trampled by Turtles, the California Honeydrops, Kitchen Dwellers and Leftover Salmon.
The festival also brings late-night shows, a craft beer event, an exclusive mountaintop dinner, on-site music workshops for both kids and adults, free public performances, and various mountain activities.
Colorado Pint Day
It’s time to celebrate Colorado craft beer. The 10th Colorado Pint Day is next Wednesday, with breweries all over the state offering pints in limited-edition glassware. They donate $1 of each pint glass sold to the Colorado Brewers Guild and its mission to promote independent craft breweries.
BockFests in Lakewood, Paonia
Stout month ends Friday, making way for bock beers on Saturday, and at least two festivals celebrating the dark German style.
Green Mountain Beer Company in Lakewood hosts its third annual Bock Fest from noon to 10 p.m., with a bock beer tap takeover, collab beers, guest bocks, live music and food trucks.
Out west, Paonia United Brewing Co. is also three years into the tradition. Their festival on Saturday includes German food, live polka and, of course, bock beers.
Parade and gumbo in Manitou Springs
With Mardi Gras and lent on the horizon, Manitou Springs is celebrating Carnivale on Saturday, with a gumbo cook-off at 11 a.m., and a parade at noon.
Brewery book fair in Colorado Springs
Storybook Brewing in Colorado Springs hosts 19 authors on Saturday for a book fair and author signing. Books for all ages and across various genres will be sold and signed.
The fantasy-themed nanobrewery also hosts a mardi gras party on Tuesday, with live music and a king cake stout tapping.
Recycled fashion show in Boulder
The “Trash The Runway” fashion show returns to Boulder’s Macky Auditorium on Thursday. Trash the Runway challenges middle and high school students to create high-fashion garments entirely out of found, non-recyclable or non-compostable materials.
Scavenger hunt in Telluride
The Goose Chase Scavenger Hunt starts at 11 a.m. Saturday in Telluride. Teams of up to 4 will hit the slopes with the Goose Chase app and their wits, competing for prizes from Wagner, Yeti, Mammut, La Sportiva and more.
Save the Date(s): Sip into Spring
Palisade in the springtime is beautiful, and any season is a good time to celebrate Colorado wine. Plan a trip to the Western Slope on May 17 for the Sip into Spring wine tasting festival at Orchard River View.
As always, please send us your events and announcements. We’re happy to share them. If they don’t fit in the Get Out of Town column, we will add them to our events calendar.
